Boundary setbacks
Since October 2025, cabins under 10sqm (internal) can be placed on the boundary with no setback. Some conditions apply, such as recession planes and neighbouring windows. Over 10sqm, a one metre setback applies.

Building consent exemptions
Cabins under 30sqm don’t typically need building consent, but must meet the New Zealand Building Code for safety, insulation and durability.
